The New York Times bestselling author examines how people can drive creative, moral, and organisational progress—and how leaders can encourage originality in their organisations。

How can we originate new ideas, policies and practices without risking it all? Adam Grant shows how to improve the world by championing novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battling conformity, and bucking outdated traditions。

Using surprising studies and stories spanning business, politics, sports, and entertainment, Grant explores how to recognize a good idea, speak up without getting silenced, build a coalition of allies, choose the right time to act, and manage fear and doubt。 Parents will learn how to nurture originality in children, and leaders will discover how to fight groupthink to build cultures that welcome dissent。

Told through dazzling case studies of people going against the grain, you’ll encounter an entrepreneur who pitches the reasons not to invest, a woman at Apple who challenged Steve Jobs from three levels below, an analyst who challenged secrecy at the CIA, a billionaire financial wizard who fires employees who don’t criticize him, and the TV executive who saved Seinfeld from the cutting room floor。 Originals will give you groundbreaking insights about rejecting conformity and how to change the world。

Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World in short details how to inspire originality within yourself as a leader and encourage others to do the same。 I read this book as part of a Leadership Book project and this book pleasantly met my expectations。 While it is a bit of a long read, the lessons you gain after reading are worth it。 I particularly enjoyed how Grant goes into how creativity and originality can look within various fields as well as the various case examples provided。 While this Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World in short details how to inspire originality within yourself as a leader and encourage others to do the same。 I read this book as part of a Leadership Book project and this book pleasantly met my expectations。 While it is a bit of a long read, the lessons you gain after reading are worth it。 I particularly enjoyed how Grant goes into how creativity and originality can look within various fields as well as the various case examples provided。 While this book can be mainly geared towards individuals in business, STEM, or art-related fields, this book can be applied to professionals of any field。 If given the opportunity to read this book again, I would be happy to do so。 。。。more

This was fine, not great。 The author provides a lot of great examples and while heavy with studies, it’s easy to listen to。 It’s nothing ground breaking and there is definitely better out there with more updated information。

Fairly brilliant。 I love how the term Original is thoroughly explained。 We almost always assume that those who make wonders are especially gifted and there’s nothing we can do about it。 But it’s not always the case。 We are just so focused in looking at the big picture that we tend to forget the pieces that made it whole in the first place。Also, it reminds/tells us that anyone of us has the ability to create our own breakthrough’s。 🙃

this book was so boring - i felt like i scanned every chapter。 it read like a horrible self-help book。 furthermore, i don't think adam grant proved his point very well, since it just felt like a mumbo jumbo of so many different studies/examples。 this book was so boring - i felt like i scanned every chapter。 it read like a horrible self-help book。 furthermore, i don't think adam grant proved his point very well, since it just felt like a mumbo jumbo of so many different studies/examples。 。。。more

Good Audio read - I used examples that I listened to in my teachers so that was cool。 Mainly wanted to read by this author and read his recent book - although I’m getting a little burnt out on psychology。

Thought-provoking and yet relatably practical。

Somewhat similar to Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, Originals by Adam Grant tries to expose the foundation towards thinking different and better。 Like many of psychology/self-help books I have read so far, it it mostly a recounting of some divergents’ decisions that propelled them towards the last centile of the population, made of geniuses – not necessarily intellectually but creatively。 The only thing I could think while reading this book is: wow, this is who I’ll never be。 Lol。 Aside from my dep Somewhat similar to Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, Originals by Adam Grant tries to expose the foundation towards thinking different and better。 Like many of psychology/self-help books I have read so far, it it mostly a recounting of some divergents’ decisions that propelled them towards the last centile of the population, made of geniuses – not necessarily intellectually but creatively。 The only thing I could think while reading this book is: wow, this is who I’ll never be。 Lol。 Aside from my depressing monologue while reading through the chapters, I contemplated some behaviors that did look mildly reproducible and not completely out of character for me。 Maybe I’ll try them out some day, maybe not。 Meh。All rambling aside, this book presented good and inspiring ideas that I enjoyed reading about。 Creativity needs to be cultivated for the most part – if I am to believe Nobel Prizes’ hobbies – and hubris, my dear friend, needs to be completely discarded to make place to humility and some let’s-get-back-to-earthism。 Overall, 4 stars – would like to read again if I get time but I know I won’t。 。。。more

At first I recognised much of the material of this book from his Ted Talk about the same subject however once I got past that chapter I found the book to be filled with interesting and highly applicable knowledge on how to be an effective original thinker and more importantly how to communicate original ideas。I don't consider myself a particularly original thinker however it is part of my job to effectively communicate and convince people to change the way that they work and the way that organis At first I recognised much of the material of this book from his Ted Talk about the same subject however once I got past that chapter I found the book to be filled with interesting and highly applicable knowledge on how to be an effective original thinker and more importantly how to communicate original ideas。I don't consider myself a particularly original thinker however it is part of my job to effectively communicate and convince people to change the way that they work and the way that organisations operate and it is an incredibly difficult task。 I feel like I came away from this book with both a greater understanding of why that is and with some tools to help me in my pursuits。 。。。more

2nd DNF of the year :(It started off great for me。 I loved the first 4 chapters! The talk of inventions and innovative ideas and relating them to an "original's" mindset is great。 I thought this was going to be a 3。5/4 star non fiction read for me (for which I was so excited because I haven't read a good non fiction in so long)But then the book just goes down hill from there :( There were so many theories that I not only didn't agree with, I was strongly against that theory! A pleasant mix of ideas and examples of ideas shaped in modern times。 The author highlights through 8 chapters the practices that have been used in past for the rise of extraordinary concepts that challenged the norms of the time。 Every one talks about Steve Jobs, but this author highlights a woman who challenged him successfully and was promoted for her methods。 I have heard the story about the director who challenged the CIA with her open and uncleared intelligence concept that was in methods A pleasant mix of ideas and examples of ideas shaped in modern times。 The author highlights through 8 chapters the practices that have been used in past for the rise of extraordinary concepts that challenged the norms of the time。 Every one talks about Steve Jobs, but this author highlights a woman who challenged him successfully and was promoted for her methods。 I have heard the story about the director who challenged the CIA with her open and uncleared intelligence concept that was in methods cross sourced and better organized by topic vice agency。 However, this author unfolds the fails farther back in the journey were a cynical but supportive supervisor enabled the nurturing and growth of this concept。 A concept I was not tracking was like introverts and extraverts there is a leadership type that cynical nature blended with supper results in better outcomes than solely a cheerleader like approach of pleasantries。 Not mercurial, stubbornly saying prove it and doubt has a value。 Also a great chapter on the culture that reduces the most risks to performance and the examples of competing cultures that yield less desired outcomes。 。。。more

I appreciate the recap at the back of the book。 The quantity of the annotations seemed like a little much almost like I was reading a book within a book。 Well organized and easy to digest。

My favorite chapter may be the part where it suggests procrastination as another way to be creative and original。 That section alone made me love this book。。。。

I admittedly don't read much nonfiction, but wanted to branch out。 This was an excellent book to start with。 I appreciated the variety of examples of originals, from tech entrepreneurs to CIA agents to suffragists, and the deep dives into what made them so successful in their fields。 It was so engaging that I *almost* forgot I was reading nonfiction。 I admittedly don't read much nonfiction, but wanted to branch out。 This was an excellent book to start with。 I appreciated the variety of examples of originals, from tech entrepreneurs to CIA agents to suffragists, and the deep dives into what made them so successful in their fields。 It was so engaging that I *almost* forgot I was reading nonfiction。 。。。more
